Couple Builds Greenhouse Around Home to Grow Food and Keep Warm

When it comes to extreme greenhouses this one is a new idea to me. This couple has built a greenhouse around their whole house! They live a very cold environment so they wanted to use the energy of the sun to warm their entire house and yard.

This seems like a good idea, as the sun has plenty of energy, and by building the greenhouse around the house they have created a small greenhouse world. They can be outside when it is normally too cold to enjoy the outdoors. They can also grow plants anywhere in their yard that would never survive the frigid winters.

So really, this is a glimpse into our future. Perhaps a new way to sustain life in places simply too cold for us to endure. Could Antarctica be colonized with this type of home construction? I bet we can get some cheap land in areas that are simply too cold for people to live in now.

Your own little world, your own little green house in middle of anywhere you want. Sitting on the roof of your conventional house looking through a glass roof at all the wonderful stars and moon.

The average temperature in Stockholm in January is -3°C (27°F). For Marie Granmar and Charles Sacilotto it can be much warmer thanks to the greenhouse that blankets their home.

“For example at the end of January it can be -2°C outside and it can be 15 to 20°C upstairs,” explains Sacilotto. He was inspired to build a house-in-a-greenhouse through his relationship with architect Bengt Warne who began designing the first Naturhus (Nature House) in 1974*.

The favorite spot is the glass-covered roof deck. Since there’s no longer need for a roof, the couple removed it and now have a large space for sunbathing, reading or playing with their son on swings and bikes.
